Preventing and Treating the Flu and Common Colds

Build a Healthy Foundation:

Drinking at least 8 glasses of pure water each day, avoiding sugar, sleeping enough, and balancing stress with relaxation are all critical to an optimally functioning immune system. Basic hygiene in the form of washing hands frequently and regular cleaning of shared spaces is also very effective for reducing exposure to viruses and bacteria.

Consider Vaccines:

Deciding to get a flu vaccine (including the H1N1 vaccine) is a personal decision based on careful evaluation of risk factors. The most up to date recommendations are available at www.flu.gov. For more individual analysis of unique individual health concerns and risk factors, please schedule an appointment with your physician.

Boost Your Immune System:

During cold and flu season, taking immune boosting supplements before you are sick can dramatically reduce your risk of developing an infection. This is most important when in close contact with people who are ill, especially family members.

Adults:

  • Bio-veg 1-2 caps, 1-2 times per day

Children:

  • HMF-Forte 1 cap per day
  • BerryWell for children over 3: ½ tsp per day for; for children under 3: ¼ tsp per day

Treat any Onset of Symptoms IMMEDIATELY:

Adults:

  • Bio-Veg 2 caps every 2 hours for first 24-48 hours, then 2 caps 4 times per day
  • Oscillococcinum ½ vial every 4-6 hours for 3 doses
  • Herbal Cough Elixir 1 tsp 4 times per day
  • Warming socks treatment every night until feeling better (see other side)

Children:

  • HMF-Forte 1 cap 2 times per day

  • Wet Cough Elixir ½ tsp 4 times per day
  • Warming socks treatment every night until feeling better (see below)

Consult your naturopathic physician:
